Organize Downloads Folder
Use Cowork to automatically organize messy download folders by file type and date
Overview
The Downloads folder is one of the easiest places to become cluttered. With Cowork, you can have Claude automatically organize these files by file type or date.
Steps
Step 1: Describe Your Needs
In the Claude dialog, describe the folder you want to organize and the organization rules:
Help me organize my ~/Downloads folder using these rules:
- Image files (jpg, png, gif) go to "Images" folder
- Documents (pdf, doc, docx) go to "Documents" folder
- Archives (zip, rar, 7z) go to "Archives" folder
- Other files go to "Other" folder
Step 2: Review Cowork's Plan
Claude will analyze your Downloads folder and present an organization plan. You'll see:
- A list of files to be moved
- The destination for each file
- New folders to be created
Review this plan carefully to ensure it matches your expectations.
Step 3: Confirm Execution
If the plan looks correct, click the "Execute" button or type "confirm execution" in the dialog.
Cowork will automatically:
- Create the necessary category folders
- Move files to their corresponding locations
- Report the organization results
Important Note: Before executing the organization, we recommend reviewing Cowork's plan first. If you have important files, consider backing them up. Cowork is still in preview stage.
Advanced Usage
You can have Claude organize files by date, for example:
Help me move files older than 30 days in my Downloads folder to an "Archive" folder
Common Questions
Q: Will Cowork delete my files?
A: No. Cowork only moves files and never deletes anything. All operations will be shown to you for confirmation beforehand.
Q: What happens if file names are duplicated?
A: Cowork automatically handles duplicate names, typically by adding a numeric suffix to the filename.
